Welcome to Gethsemane Lutheran Church Youth Ministries!

We want to help young people build a lasting relationship with Jesus Christ. A merciful and gracious Jesus, who forgives, heals and loves us.  The youth ministries at Gethsemane are focused on one thing…introducing our young people to Jesus and helping them grow into faithful disciples. We strive to have everything we do match up with that purpose…and along the way we have a really great time! Wherever you are in your faith journey, there is a spot for you here at Gethsemane.

Sunday School, Champions for Christ

sunday-school_2013Gethsemane offers a Sunday school program for grades Pre-K through 6th grade on Sundays from 9:20 – 10:20 from September through May. Families are encouraged to register their children during Rally Day; the church’s “kick off” to Sunday school each fall in mid September.

In Sunday school, children grow in faith as they experience the Bible stories of God’s love. Our Sunday school program connects the stories the kids hear in worship with the lessons they learn in Sunday school. The classes follow stories in the Revised Common Lectionary. Throughout the three-year cycle, each lesson comes from a Bible story in the Old Testament, the Gospels, or Acts. Our volunteer team of teachers shares their faith with the kids as they learn together through storytelling, music, games, and crafts. The kids also participate in a Youth Led Service during the year and work on many outreach programs for our shut-ins and local charities such as New Horizons and Families in Transition.

Vacation Bible School

Gethsemane’s Vacation Bible School is generally held the week after school lets out in June. It runs 4-5 days and is held in the evening. VBS is open to all members of Gethsemane ages 3 – 12 (?) and we encourage the kids to invite their friends to join them! Each year we pick a new theme and the amazing team of volunteers work to create a program that is a fun, creative way for young people to learn about God’s love. There is no cost for the program and we start the registration process (right here, on-line) in early May.

Sunday School Retreat

Gethsemane participates in the Sunday School Weekend Retreat at Camp Calumet. This is a weekend designed to promote interaction between different Sunday school groups throughout the New England Synod. The program is aimed at Grades 3-6, and fosters social interaction and enrichment by centering on group games and activities that place a premium on team dynamics, working with others, and building friendships through faith and fun. The kids come away having made new friends that they keep for a long time – and many of the kids go on to be counselors at Calumet!

Winter Fling

Winter Fling for Youth at Calumet is an excellent opportunity for youth groups to get away, and spend some fun and exciting time together learning more about themselves, each other, and God’s wonderful love for them. This is a great weekend for the kids to come together with friends to laugh, play, sing, and celebrate the bonds of friendship and to make new friends. They also learn about ways to care for one another, and to take the gifts that we have been blessed with, and use them to make the world a better place. In addition to theme sessions, there will be plenty of time to enjoy all that Calumet has to offer in the wintertime…sledding, ice-skating, snowshoeing, broomball, arts & crafts, beading, and much, much more!

Hammonasset Youth Gathering

HammonassettHammonasset is the annual gathering of youth throughout the New England Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). More than three decades ago a small group of Lutheran churches in Connecticut decided to get together for a youth camping weekend. They repeated the campout in subsequent years, adding people and activities. From this modest beginning, the event we call Hammonasset has grown to include more than 60 church youth groups from all six New England states. Since that first gathering, the event has grown to include 800+ attendees, nationally-known speakers, great live bands, small group Bible study, and inspirational worship. Speakers and bands frequently comment that “no other synod does anything like Hammonasset.”

Confirmation Program

2010Gethsemane offers a 2 year Confirmation Program for 7th and 8th graders. Our confirmands, pastor and teachers spend a weekend at Camp Calumet that is a great opportunity for them to spend quality time in recreation, Bible Study, and community building.
